Two local residents whose families’ roots are in Shubuta, Mississippi — a town known for two horrific group lynchings — talk about the way that their relatives responded to the racism they encountered in their hometown.

ALTAMONT —The Southern Poverty Law Center, an internationally known organization that tracks the activities of hate groups in the United States, has put Altamont on the map — the Hate Map.

Published last month in the center’s Spring 2015 “Intelligence Report,” and posted online at its website, www.splcenter.org, the Hate Map for 2014 lists Altamont as the only location in New York State to have an active chapter of the Ku Klux Klan.

School leaders can, and must, insist on outward signs of respect, and maybe inward changes will come. Maybe the taunting students will find their heart.

Amyah Trossbach, who has a black father and a white mother, said she commonly hears comments about her race from peers. Administrators have responded to her complaints, but she has had these exchanges throughout her one-and-a-half years at BKW.
