With every early, in-person, and mail-in ballot counted, Democrat Michelle Hinchey bested GOP-backed Richard Amedure, 77,272 to 74,647, to win the 46th District State Senate seat. 

Gary Greenberg, a Democratic candidate for the New York Senate’s 46th District, has been found ineligible for a ballot position in the state’s June 23 Democratic primary and said he’ll appeal the decision by the state’s Board of Elections.

“I’m very disciplined and very determined,” said Amedure, a long-time member of the Rensselaerville Planning Board.

“It didn’t make sense to have two people with the same policy positions run against each other,” said Jeff Collins, explaining why he has ended his campaign to represent District 46 in the State Senate and will instead support fellow Democrat Michelle Hinchey.

“I never intended to be a career politician,” Republican Senator George Amedore told The Enterprise this week after announcing on Friday that he won’t run for re-election in 2020.

Amedore, who is 50, served in the State Assembly for six years, until 2012, and has represented District 46 in the State Senate since 2014.

Michelle Hinchey of Saugerties announced Sunday she has formed a committee to explore a run for State Senate.

Survivors of child sex abuse say they will continue to press the New York State Senate to allow a vote on the Child Victims Act — which would extend the statute of limitations, giving child victims more time to process their abuse and come forward. The Act has passed with bipartisan support in the Assembly, but has been stonewalled in the Senate.  ​

Abortion and climate change were two of the issues that the candidates most stridently disagreed on during a well-attended debate Tuesday night. Each wants to represent the critical 46th District in the State Senate.

The law passed both houses without any opposing votes. It was a minor adjustment to the social services law that deals with access to private records during an investigation of a missing child.

In conjunction with National Lymphedema Awareness Day, Senator George Amedore read a resolution passed by the Senate the day before it was visited by Emma Detlefsen, a 6-year-old from Berne who has helped to raise funds to research the disease that she has.
