Employees and management of The Grand Guilderland — formerly the Guilderland Center Nursing Home — discussed why employees held an informational picket outside the facility last week.

GUILDERLAND — Members of the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters Local 291 picketed on Sept. 21 in front of the site where Pyramid Management, which owns Crossgates Mall, is building a hotel near the mall on Route 20.

BERNE — The town’s highway superintendent — a Republican in a town governed by a council of all Democrats — left on a planned trip to Maine at 2 p.m. last Friday afternoon. That evening, he heard from two of his six full-time highway workers: They had been fired by the town supervisor.

GUILDERLAND — Employees of the nursing home in Guilderland Center picketed along Route 146 on Wednesday afternoon, crying out for justice and demanding to be reimbursed the money they say their employer owes them.

“What do we want?” chanted a young man with a bullhorn.

“Justice!” cried the two-dozen picketers.

Perhaps feeling the pressure of several years of budget cuts, the formerly cohesive Guilderland School board, functioning under new leadership, has been deeply divided on small issues of pay.
