Iwo Jima

On Tuesday morning, The Iwo Jima Survivors of New York’s Capital Region, who gather once a month for breakfast at the Homefront café in Altamont, had a special get-together to mark the anniversary of the start of the 36-day battle, which had over 26,000 American casualties, including nearly 7,000

Wearing their purple hearts, a group of Iwo Jima veterans met on the 71st anniversary of the famous flag-raising and recalled the 1945 battle over breakfast in Altamont.

To the Editor:

Kudos to The Enterprise and reporter Tyler Murphy on the engaging story about the Battle of Iwo Jima and interview with local resident Marine Second Lieutenant Sandy Berkman.

NEW SCOTLAND — Leading a platoon of 53 men into one of the bloodiest battles of World War II, 2nd Lt. Sanford “Sandy” Berkman and all of the Marines under his command would be wounded or killed while fighting on the Pacific island of Iwo Jima.
