GUILDERLAND — An educational heroin forum on Monday, May 18, at the Guilderland Public Library.

A 24-year-old who police say is addicted to heroin has been arrested again recently — in Berne, Schnectady, and Oneonta — on charges including larceny and possession of cocaine. He was caught in Berne, after a foot chase, and is now out on $50,000 bail.

A middle-aged, middle-class mason says painkillers from work-related injuries led him to heroin and that his first-ever arrest has caused him to turn his life around.

Guilderland High school Assistant Principal Ann-Marie McManus said the school wants to be the first stop for prevention and intervention when it comes to illegal drug use.

GUILDERLAND — Five panelists at a heroin and opiate education forum on Wednesday agreed that the war on drugs is being lost and the biggest problems are with prevention and treatment.

Before he hanged himself in his jail cell, Adam Rappaport doodled on prison stationery, lightly penciling in one corner, in small capital letters next to a six-point star the word "hope" — only this and nothing more.

Guilderland Police arrested a 29-year-old homeless man for attempted burglaries, who then hanged himself in jail. The sheriff estimates the county's jail has one suicide a year.

In the past year, said Police Chief Carol Lawlor, there were 17 heroin overdoses in Guilderland, and five of them were fatal.

A Colonie man was arrested for allegedly stabbing a Voorheesville resident at the victim's home.
