Dan Dymes felt helpless in the wee hours of Wednesday morning as his Agway delivery truck was stuck in the snow and he watched the Prospect Terrace fire next door getting closer. In the end, he was grateful, although his truck was damaged and his mulch pallets unsellable, that no one was hurt.

Carman Road closed down Wednesday night for almost two hours because of a fire that caused heavy damage to a home’s detached garage.

Westerlo fire

A fire in Westerlo that occurred two days before Christmas has the family living in town without a home, although fire departments were able to save their pets and presents. A community response, including an account to donate to, has sprung up in response.

The intention is to equip responders in the case of an oil-train derailment, but local responders say it will likely prove useful for things like gas leaks or car accidents.

The Length of Service Award Program, or LOSAP, was voted, 54 to 2, to be discontinued for Voorheesville Area Ambulance Service members. VAAS stopped functioning on Oct. 15, and the vote allows members to stop paying fees for a service they no longer have.

Residents of the village may vote Tuesday, Nov. 15, on discontinuing the Length Of Service Award program, known as LOSAP, for members of the Voorheesville Area Ambulance Service. The LOSAP program provides pensions for volunteers.

After a “yes” vote on Tuesday, renovation of the McKownville firehouse is expected to begin in the spring.

Altamont firefighters have rushed to put out three fires in the last month and have decided to turn Friday’s open house into a fundraiser for the affected families.

McKownville residents will vote on Tuesday whether to approve a proposed plan to renovate the local firehouse that will raise their taxes an average of $136.58 per household.

Paul and Theresa Oliver, who narrowly escaped the fire that took their Gardner Road home early Tuesday morning, plan to rebuild. “We wouldn’t leave here,” said Theresa Oliver on Tuesday afternoon. “This is family land.”
