The McKownville Fire Department, which like the Guilderland Center Fire Department is 100 years old this year, plans to go ahead with its $3.2M expansion plan, and will make it financially feasible by closing the firehouse throughout the construction period.

From 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, a referendum will be held in the firehouse at 2198 Berne-Altamont Road for voters to allow the sale of a tanker.

Local fire departments held open houses or Recruit New York events last weekend.

The Albany County Rural Fire Chiefs Association and the sheriff's office are in the beginning stages of planning for an East Berne training grounds for firefighters and police.

Voorheesville's mayor and village board plans to replace the Voorheesville Area Ambulance Service with re-trained volunteer firefighters. The retaliatory move would undermine the service without ensuring a viable replacement.
