Berne Fire District

To the Editor:

We would like to take this opportunity to commend both the East Berne and Berne volunteer fire departments for their unbelievably quick response to a 911 call to a fire at our home.

The flames at 1640 Helderberg Trail damaged the rear side of the building, just a few yards away from others just above the Fox Creek.

Berne Fire District Chief Richard Guilz said firefighters had trouble ventilating and entering the single-family structure because of its age and layers of roofing.

On March 14, residents will gather at Maple on the Lake to view potential designs for the facilities, to go on land along Route 443 in East Berne, and talk to officials overseeing the project.

After a kitchen fire last month, the family's home on Bradt Hollow Road is uninhabitable as they stay in a family member's house.

Berne neighbors of Charles Tommell Jr. helped him after a tractor trailer carrying his cattle tipped over; Tommell said the driver had had an unblemished record.

Residents had questions about pollution, the tax base, and the potential for the sheriff's office to buy a piece of the East Berne property, the potential location of intermunicipal training facilities and a new firehouse.
