RENSSELAERVILLE — With three decades of corporate experience behind her, Independence Party member Kathryn Wank says she wants to do the job of assessor fairly and by the book.

BERNE — With her children grown up, Melanie Bunzey wants a new way to connect with people in the town. The Democrat is running for a four-year assessor position.

BERNE — After 10 years as an appraiser, Republican Walter Scram wants to add assessments to his work of evaluating properties.

Although nearly half the town's voters are enrolled as Democrats and a decade ago the party dominated, it is now the small parties that are determining the winners.

In three instances, candidates didn’t file their paperwork on time and failed to secure endorsements before the Sept. 10 primaries.

“I’d worked in the assessor’s office for so long, it felt like I had really good training,” said Karen VanWagenen on stepping up to the helm.
