Angelo Santabarbara

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara has long advocated for creating better programs statewide, including standardized training for first responders in how to effectively communicate with people who are on the spectrum. This training took place at the Shaker Road-Loudonville Firehouse last Friday.

ALBANY COUNTY  — The Guilderland police chief and a local legislator each has a son on the autism spectrum, and each is working to keep people who have trouble speaking safe.

One of five bills designed to improve services for adults with autism was signed into law by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo on Nov. 29. They offer housing loans, job support, and state identification cards.

Republican Peter Lopez is running unopposed to represent the 102nd Assembly District, which includes the Helderberg Hilltowns of Rensselaerville and Westerlo. The other two Hilltowns, Berne and Knox, are in the 111th District where Democratic incumbent Angelo Santabarbara is again being challenged by Republican Peter Vroman.

Seeking his third term in the Assembly, Democrat Angelo Santabarbara names some of the accomplishments he’s proudest of: fighting for funds for public schools; improving infrastructure; and working across the aisle with Republican Peter Lopez, who represents the other half of the Hilltowns, on a bill to help people with autism.
