Efforts are continuing from a variety of directions to drastically reduce the size of the Albany County Legislature and, with it, the quality, diversity, and competence of the Legislature.

Pay-to-play refers to individuals, businesses, or organizations making campaign contributions to public officials and receiving paybacks in return. These paybacks include lucrative county contracts, influence over legislation, and political appointments.

A public hearing is scheduled for Dec. 29 on cutting the number of representatives to the county legislature from 39 to 29; the reduction could lead to less diversity and less chance of coalitions that don't conform to strict party-line politics.

The county legislature recognized firefighters from Berne, East Berne, and Westerlo on Dec. 15 for their service helping during a severe snowstorm in Erie County in the middle of November.

Deborah Busch, who represents a portion of the Hilltowns, said the experience demonstrated to her government failure, and malice and changed her views on the death penalty.

The Altamont post of the American Legion raised well over $15,000 toward a proposed housing complex that would support veterans struggling with homelessness and addiction.

ALBANY — The designs and connections for solar panels on county-owned buildings need to be known by firefighters who may be in danger otherwise, according to a resolution passed unanimously by the county legislature Monday night.

FORT ANN — The trespassing cases of Albany County Legislator Deborah Busch and her boyfriend, Rory Russell, were adjourned on Wednesday until Aug. 13, according to Fort Ann Court Clerk Barbara Burch.
