Learn about 400 years of firefighting in Albany

On May 6, Albany City Historian Anthony Opalka will give a visual presentation about his book published in March 2025, “The Firehouses of Albany.”
The book traces the 400-year history of fire protection and firefighting in Albany from the bucket brigades of the first hundred years, the city’s first fire engine of 1732, to the present. The story is told through all the firehouses that dot the city’s built environment.
Mr. Opalka has been the Albany city historian since 2008. He has been a fixture in the historic preservation scene in Albany for more than 50 years. He has authored numerous articles in local history books and magazines.
In addition to his duties as city historian, he is also involved with the Albany Firefighters Museum.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase for $40 plus tax.
The public is invited; join us at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, at the Clarksville Community Church at 1997 Delaware Turnpike in Clarksville.
