Albany County is colored green, indicating an “extreme cold watch.”

ALBANY COUNTY — Albany County, like all of eastern New York and western New England, will be under an “extreme cold watch,” according to the National Weather Service.

From 7 a.m. on Saturday through 1 p.m. on Sunday, wind-chill values as low as 35 degrees below zero are possible in the Helderbergs and eastern Catskills, Schoharie County, and the Mohawk Valley.

Additional cold warnings or advisories will be needed into Monday as well, says the weather service, which warns of “the potential for hypothermia and frostbite for those who spend time outdoors without taking precautions, especially for Saturday night into Sunday morning.”

In addition to the cold, the weather service says, there will be periods of light snow developing Friday night and lasting into Saturday with between one and three inches expected.

“As winds increase Saturday, blowing snow will reduce visibility in some areas,” the weather service says.

In Albany for Friday night, there is an 80-percent chance of snow with accumulation of less than 1 inch. The low is expected to be 8 degrees.

On Saturday, the chance of snow is 60 percent with, again, less than one inch expected. The day will be cloudy with a high near 14 degrees and wind-chill values as low as -11 degrees. Northwest winds are forecast at 9 to 18 miles per hour with gusts as high as 32 miles per hour.

On Saturday night, the low will be around -5 degrees with wind gusts as high as 31 miles per hour.

Sunday is forecast as sunny with a high near 11 degrees and a low Sunday night of -4 degrees.

Monday, too, is forecast as sunny with a high near 19 degrees, and a low Monday night around -1.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny with a high near 24 degrees and a low Tuesday night around 8 degrees.

On Wednesday, there’s a 30-percent chance of snow with a high near 33 degrees and a low Wednesday night of around 19 degrees.

Thursday is expected to be partly sunny with a high near 35 degrees.

“This winter has proven to be a brutal one, with high snowfall totals and continuous temperatures below freezing,” said Governor Kathy Hochul in a press release about the weather forecast. “Unfortunately, the cold we’ve seen for nearly a month is set to continue, but New Yorkers know how to stay safe. Stay home if you can, but if you can’t, make sure to allow yourself extra travel time and bring necessities like blankets, snacks and water with you. Before we know it, this winter will be behind us, but for now stay safe.”

The release advises New Yorkers to check out cold weather tips from the Department of Health; additional tips for preventing frostbite and hypothermia; information on carbon-monoxide poisoning; information on the proper use of generators; and safe winter driving tips.
