ALATAMONT — Peter Michael Ramo, a tax bureau chief who liked helping his children raise animals on their farm, died on Tuesday Jan. 6, 2026. He was 82.

“Son of the late Albert and Virginia (née McGillin) Ramo,” his family wrote in a tribute, “he was born in Jamaica, no, not the island but in Jamaica, New York on Feb. 20, 1943. Peter was the oldest of four siblings: Mariann Cohen, Joseph, and Dyann.

“After seeing Diana Bender on the New York City subway/el train for many weeks, they finally started talking. They began dating and both graduated from NYC Community College in 1963. They were married on Sept. 12, 1964, living in Brooklyn.

“They moved several times, going to Amityville, Albany, and Altamont. After he grew up in the New York City projects, they ultimately settled on a 10-plus acre farm that was an absolute great place to raise his children.

“On July 11, 1963, he started a career with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, working his way up over the years to NYS Tax Bureau Chief. He retired from this position in April of 2005.

“While his kids were growing up, Diana and him were very involved in 4-H. They raised sheep and goats that the kids proudly showed at the Altamont and New York State fairs.

“After retirement, Peter bought a winter home in Delray Beach, Florida. This would become an escape from the cold of the Northeast. It also became a brief winter reprieve for some of his children during the winter.”
