A Bethlehem Senior Transportation Service sedan, similar to this one, was struck head-on on Oct. 10, killing one of the passengers.
BETHLEHEM — An 83-year-old driver, police say, hit a town sedan for transporting seniors, killing a passenger just minutes after side-swiping another vehicle.
No arrest has been made as the crash is still being investigated, Bethlehem’s deputy chief, James Rexford, told The Altamont Enterprise on Monday.
Events unfolded this way, according to a release from the Bethlehem Police Department.
At about 12:46 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, William H. Morehouse, of West Coxsackie, was driving north on Route 9W when, in the area of Church Road, he crossed into the southbound lane, sideswiping a vehicle driven by Paul A. Moore, 74, of Hannacroix. Neither driver was injured.
Then, at 12:48 p.m., Bethlehem officers responded to reports of a car driving erratically and learned of a crash on Route 9W in the area of Wemple Road. Investigation showed Morehouse had continued traveling north on 9W and again crossed into the southbound lane, striking a Bethlehem Senior Transportation Service sedan head-on.
The car’s driver, Christina Doran, 73, of Delmar, was not injured. A passenger in the car, Jean R. Hipwell, 88, of Glenmont, was transported to St. Peter's Hospital due to chest pain, where she later died.
Morehouse was transported to St. Peter's Hospital with a leg injury.
Asked if Morehouse’s erratic driving was caused by a medical condition, Rexford wrote in a Monday email, “my understanding is he was failing to keep right. At this point the cause of crash is being investigated.”
Both crashes remain under investigation.
