Robert Leonard Marx
Robert L. “Bob” Marx, who served in the Air Force and had a career at General Electric, was a gifted athlete and talented woodworker.
He died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2024, at the blessed age of 93.
He was born on Jan. 26, 1931 in Schenectady. After graduating from Draper High School, he actively served in the United States Air Force and then in the Air Force Reserves.
“Bob was employed by the General Electric Company in Schenectady for over 41 years, where he rose through the ranks with promotions to become the human resources manager of the GE Power Generation Division,” his family wrote in a tribute.
“Also, he was installed as a Mason of the Masonic Temple Noah Lodge 0754 in Altamont,” his family wrote, “and was the oldest living Past Master of this lodge prior to his passing.
“Bob was an incredible athlete receiving numerous awards and accolades in his lifetime for his exceptional skills in basketball, baseball, tennis, bowling, running, and jogging. He traveled throughout the United States as a participant on several competitive sports leagues, and with the Cape Cod Senior Softball League during his retirement.
“Pursuing his hobby as a talented woodworker, he took pleasure in creating beautiful heirlooms for his family and friends.
“He bestowed nicknames to those he loved and admired, enjoyed telling stories and jokes, and prided himself on his puns. He was an enormous sports enthusiast and unwavering fan of the New York Yankees, New York Giants, and the Oneonta Soccer Team.”

Robert Leonard Marx is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Beverly “Bev” Marx; his two daughters, Cheryl “Cheri” France and her husband, Leon, and Michele Fonda and her husband, Mark; and his adoring sisters, June Montenaro and her husband, Stephen, and Joyce Santor.
“Robert was an amazing grandfather lovingly called ‘Pom Pom’ by his grandchildren, Noël, Nicole, Shanelle, Crystle, and CJ as well as his 12 great-grandchildren,” his family wrote. “He also loved his many nieces and nephews.
“Bob’s family would like to thank the staff at Eddy Village Green (House 6) in Cohoes, New York for the compassionate care they provided to him over the last few months and a special thank-you to Community Hospice of Albany County for their support.”
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on his birthday, Sunday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Helderberg Reformed Church at 435 Route 146 (Main Street) in Guilderland Center.
