Body found in Knox awaits DNA testing

This Google Maps screenshot shows the general area where New York State Police say they recovered a body that has been tentatively identified but still awaits DNA confirmation.

KNOX — New York State Police believe they know the identity of a dead person found in Knox late last month, but are awaiting DNA results to confirm before releasing the information.

Trooper Stephanie O’Neill told The Enterprise this week that the body was discovered on July 21 in a wooded area near Villeneuve Drive by a Schoharie County resident, who alerted the authorities that evening. 

Villeneuve Drive is a small offshoot of Bozenkill, and is near train tracks. 

Because the body was at the bottom of steep terrain, state police waited until the next morning to retrieve the body, having secured the area in the meantime, O’Neill said. 

She said that an investigation is ongoing and that police are not sharing any more information at this time.
