School sports teach teamwork and discipline

To the Editor:
My name is Jack McDermott and I am an eighth-grade student at Berne-Knox-Westerlo. Ever since I was young, I have been involved in sports.

They are a big part of my life, and I would be very sad if I didn't have the opportunity to play them. The past two years I have been involved in modified baseball and basketball.

I think they are good opportunities for kids. They help them keep up their grades and learn teamwork and discipline.

I know with the upcoming school budget, sports and other extracurricular activities could be cut. That makes me very upset.

I have had such good experiences being a part of these teams. I have had great coaches and made friends in these activities. I am lucky enough to also play sports outside of school, but I know not all kids are lucky enough to do that.

I also learned that late buses may be a part of the cut, which would make it very hard for parents to make arrangements for their kids with after-school sports and other activities.

I can't even imagine sports being cut from the school. I know so many kids that they mean so much to. I hope if you read this you will vote “yes” and keep our sports and other programs going.
