Harold F. Greene Jr.
Harold Greene, a long-time resident of Guilderland, died peacefully at the age of 94 on Halloween at his son’s home in Trumbull, Connecticut.
He was born in Franklin, Massachusetts to Harold and Rachel (née Fitzgerald) Greene. He joined the Army after high school and served in Korea before graduating from Northeastern University with a degree in mathematics.
He later added a master’s degree from the University at Albany during a long career in teaching and school administration. He retired from the Albany Public Schools.
In his later years, M. Greene was active in union and senior causes. He was longtime president of the Albany Public Schools Teachers Association. Then he was founder and president of the district’s retiree chapter and an officer of New York State United Teachers Retiree Council 10. He was also a board member of New York Statewide Senior Action Council.
“Harold married Eva Shediack in 1958 and they enjoyed 55 years of marriage,” his family wrote in a tribute. “They were dedicated to family and had three sons, Harold J., Jonathan, and Steven. It was not uncommon to see both of them up at the crack of dawn helping the boys on their paper routes during rain or snowstorms in exchange for a contribution to a fund for family outings. The day would end with family discussion of work, school, and the nightly news.”

Mr. Greene’s parents died before him as did his wife and eldest son, Major General Harold J. Greene, who was killed in action in Afghanistan.
He is survived by his son Jonathan and his wife, Jacqueline Carter of Trumbull, Connecticut; his son Steven of Cicero, New York; and Harold’s wife, Colonel (retired) Susan Myers of Ashburn, Virginia.
He also has four grandchildren, Major (retired) Matthew Greene and his wife, Kasandra Keyton, of Boston, Massachusetts; Stephanie Greene and her husband, George Alvarez, M.D. of Huntington, New York; Amelia Greene of Brooklyn, New York; and Melanie Greene of Medford, Massachusetts.
There will not be a wake or funeral at this time. The family is planning a memorial event for friends and family at a later date.
