Our elected officials have quietly and efficiently governed

To the Editor:
As I watch with dread the chaos that consumes some local municipalities, many states, and certainly our federal government, I can’t help thinking how lucky we are in New Scotland. Over the last few years, our elected officials have quietly and efficiently governed. No fights, no publicity stunts, no corruption, no embarrassment.

Through financial crises, COVID, supply-chain issues, inflation, and much more, we have not only kept New Scotland healthy, we have strengthened it. And we have done this without breaking the tax cap and without cutting services.

You might ask how we have accomplished this, as costs have risen at a far higher rate than the cap allows. The answer is good government and long-term vision.

We made sure our rainy-day funds were in excellent shape and acted proactively when problems loomed on the horizon. We’ve aggressively applied for grants to reduce costs. We’ve reached out to other municipalities to partner in shared services. We’ve hired excellent people in Town Hall, the Highway Department, and the Department of Public Works. We’ve fostered responsible growth and brought in small businesses to broaden the tax base. We’ve instituted green energy programs to reduce costs.

All of these initiatives took work, and the work is ongoing. Fortunately we have elected officials who have proven they are willing and able to do it. Let’s keep it that way. Please re-elect board members Bill Hennessy and Bridgit Burke, Supervisor Doug LaGrange, Town Clerk Lisa Williams, and Highway Superintendent Ken Guyer.
