Five adults displaced, two cats die in Glenmont house fire

The house at 201 River Road in Glenmont caught on fire Saturday morning.

GLENMONT — A Saturday morning fire at 201 River Road was contained to one bedroom, according to a release from the Bethlehem Police Department.

A resident was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation and two cats died in the fire.

Five adults were displaced by the fire.

“The first responders were amazing,” said Christine Delsignore, who owns the home and had lived there for more than 20 years.

On Monday, she praised the work of the volunteer firefighters, the police, and the emergency medical technicians who had responded to the scene of the fire.

Someone who lived in the home called 9-1-1 at 7 a.m. on July 15 and, when police arrived, they found all of the home’s occupants outside with heavy smoke coming from a second-floor bedroom, the release from the Bethlehem Police said.

The Selkirk Fire Department arrived shortly after and contained the fire in the one bedroom. The Selkirk volunteers were helped by fire departments from Delmar, Elsmere, Slingerlands, and North Bethlehem as well as Delmar-Bethlehem Emergency Medical Services.

Bethlehem Police are investigating the cause and origin of the fire.

    The town executed a lease agreement at its March meeting that would charge Michael Stanton, of Stanton Farms, LLC,  $45 per acre for 216 tillable acres at the historic Heath Farm property. Stanton Farm, which had already farmed the land under an agreement with the previous property owner, was the only applicant for the lease.
