BERNE — Barbara Ann (née Traver) Snyder, a longtime Hilltown beautician, died peacefully on Friday, Jan. 27, 2023, after a brief illness. She was 91.

Born in Hudson, New York, she was the daughter of the late John and Clara Traver. She moved to Berne for her senior year of high school where she met her husband, Jimmy.

“She worked for the phone company in East Berne for a few years, but her longtime favorite job was being a beautician in the Hilltowns, for many years working along with Ethel, her mother-in-law,” her family wrote in a tribute. “Barb retired in the 1990s.

“She enjoyed camping, hunting, snowmobiling, traveling, quilting, painting, and walking with friends Millie and Mary Lou. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Berne Fire Company Ladies’ Auxiliary, and also a member of the First Reformed Church of Berne.”

She is survived by her son, Michael Snyder, and his wife, Vickie; by her brother-in-law, Mitchell Snyder, and his wife, Jane; and by many beloved nephews and nieces, and great-nephews and great-nieces. 

Her husband, James H. Snyder, died before her, as did her parents, John and Clara Traver; her brothers, Jack and Everett Traver; and her father- and mother-in-law, James C. and Ethel Snyder.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Berne Reformed Church at 1664 Helderberg Trail.

Private burial will be in the spring.
