Voorheesville Library Notes for Wednesday, January 4, 2023

“Americanah” will be discussed at the Voorheesville Public Library on Feb. 1. In her third novel, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie tells the story of a Nigerian woman, Ifemelu, who leaves Nigeria and her first love, Obinze, to work and study in America. 

We’ll be discussing these books in February:

— Fiction Book Discussion: “Americanah” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 15 and/or 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 1; 

— Middle School Book Club: “The Last Cuentista” by Donna Barba Higuera, 10:40 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Voorheesville’s high school library; and

— Talk & Taste Cookbook Club: “ The Full Plate” by Ayesha Curry, 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 16.

All discussions will be held in the library community room, unless otherwise stated. Please register online each month for any of the book discussions. Limited copies of some titles are available for $5, compliments of the Friends of the Library. Library copies will also be available for checkout and downloadable ebook and audiobook versions are on Overdrive. 

Slime Lab 

Students in grades 6 through 12 are invited to come to the library after school, at 3 p.m., Friday, Jan. 6.  Join us for a deluxe slime program that will delight your senses. Please register, so we'll be sure to have enough snacks. 

Preschool Story Time 

Children ages 2 to 5, with a caregiver are invited  to join us at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 10, as we have fun with stories celebrating the new year. Enjoy an interactive, theme-based, multi-age story time with an emphasis on early literacy that will include an art activity that can be completed at the library or at home. No registration needed. 

Paper Circuits 

Students in grades 6 through 12 are invited to come to the library after school, at 3 p.m., Friday, Jan. 13. This week we’ll use circuit supplies to make your paper creation light up and move. Registration is required, and yes, there will be snacks provided. 

Manga Madness 

The manga club will be trying out some anime cookbooks and bringing in a dish to share for a potluck lunch at the library, 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 15. Choose one of three available cookbooks, try some of the recipes at home, then bring a dish to share with fellow manga maniacs. Open to grades 7 thru college. Please register and choose a book at the library.

Sock dolls 

Students of all ages should register for this community-service project for Monday, Jan. 16. You will learn to sew a simple sock doll for a local charity. Tweens in grades 4 through 6, and caregivers are invited to work together from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. on this sewing project. Teens in grades 7 to 12 will meet from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Community service credits will be given as appropriate. All supplies will be provided, and no experience is necessary.  

Grab & Go 

Monday, Jan. 23, is Grab & Go day at the library. Register online to pick up a to-go kit and enjoy some creative time at your leisure. The kit can be picked up during regular library hours. Projects are relatively easy, with the freedom to inject your own creativity and style. No experience needed. 

Holiday hours 

The library will close at 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
