Community is invited to free Thanksgiving dinner at Legion hall

Thanksgiving bounty: The Voorheesville American Legion Post 1493 Community Thanksgiving Dinner is back after a pandemic hiatus and expects to feed about 300 people.

VOORHEESVILLE — The Voorheesville American Legion Post 1493 will host its annual community Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday, Nov. 20, from noon to 4 p.m.

“It’s a complete menu from turkey, ham, and all the fixings — beverages and desserts, and it’s totally free,” said Wendall Thayer, post commander of the Legion. “Anybody can come and it’s open to everybody.”

 Thayer said, “With everything the way it is, I imagine this year it’s going to be a little more intense.”

He said the Legion typically goes through 25 to 30 turkeys and 50 to 100 pounds of potatoes every year and ends up serving about 300 people.

Thayer said there will be a box on-site for donations, with the donations being split among the New Scotland Community Food Pantry at Saint Matthew’s Church in Voorheesville, the New Scotland Kiwanis, and the Hilltown Community Resource Center.
