BERNE — Kenneth P. “Kenny” Crounse of Berne, a master carpenter who loved farming, died peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2022. He was 74.

“He was one of the most kind-hearted people,” said his son, Aaron Crounse. “He loved his animals — they were like his pets.”

Born on July 12, 1948, in Albany, to Elton and Gladys Ouderkirk Crounse and raised in New Scotland, he went to Morrisville College and studied blacksmithing when he was young.

“Kenny then turned his attention to carpentry where he became a true master of his craft and loved his work,” he family wrote in a tribute. His son said he did everything from building big barns to meticulous finish work inside houses.

“He worked on many projects around New Scotland and the Hilltowns and was always willing to lend a hand,” the tribute said. “He was also a hobby farmer who enjoyed baling hay and raising cows and pigs.”

“Farming is in our blood,” said his son.

“He also loved to golf and spend time chatting with his friends at Stewart’s over coffee,” the tribute said. “These were the highlights of his later years.”

Kenneth P. Crounse leaves behind his three sons, John Crounse, Kenneth Crounse II (Laurie), and Aaron Crounse; his three grandchildren, Justin, Nikolas, and Alex Crounse; his brother, Elton Crounse Jr. (Linda); Stephanie, who was like a daughter to him; and many nieces and nephews.

His parents, Elton and Gladys Ouderkirk Crounse, died before him, as did his brother Raymond Crounse, and his brother Ralph Crounse, who died in infancy. 

“To honor Kenny’s memory, we are holding a celebration of his life on Sept. 4 between 1 and 6 p.m. at the Glen Doone Pavilion in Thacher Park,” his family wrote. “We invite anyone who knew him to attend and remember his life and share memories.

“Although there will be tears, we plan for this to be an uplifting and happy event to laugh, share stories, and remember a life that has touched us all. If you are planning on attending, please either call or text Stephanie at 518-441-7974. Please let us know so we can have a headcount for food.”
