Guilderland Library Notes for Friday, January 30, 2015
Saturday, Feb. 7, is Take Your Child to the Library Day, an excellent opportunity to introduce your children to the marvels found at the Guilderland Public Library, if you have not already done so.
Kid’s programs
On Take Your Child to the Library Day, this kid-centric day, we have two programs especially for our younger customers: Social Robotics and Maple Sugaring.
At Social Robotics at 11 a.m., Jennifer Goodall and her team from the University at Albany will teach children about all the different ways that robots help people every day. Then kids will be able to design their own robot. Who knows — the next great inventor may be among the crowd. This two-hour program is for ages eight and up. Please call 456-2400, ext. 4 to register.
At 2 p.m., kids’ attention will turn to Maple Sugaring with Anita Sanchez, a fun, family oriented program that explains the magic of maple syrup. It doesn’t matter how old you are, everyone loves the taste of maple syrup. But why does a tree taste so sweet? Children will learn how trees work, why sugar is so important and — best of all — get a taste of real maple syrup. This program is for children pre-kindergarten to grade four. Please call 456-2400, ext. 4 to register.
Local Connections
Film Series
On Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 6:30 p.m., GPL’s Local Connections Film Series continues with a 2003 film about the racehorse Seabiscuit, with scenes filmed at the Saratoga Race Track. Seabiscuit is rated PG-13 and is two hours and 20 minutes. Popcorn will be served.
First Friday Family Films
Enjoy the time-travelling magic that only Mr. Peabody’s “WABAC” (pronounced “Wayback”) Machine creates when you bring the kids to GPL on Friday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m., to see the big-screen adventures of Mr. Peabody and Sherman. This non-dynamic duo — respectively a bow-tie wearing beagle with amazing creative and intellectual powers — and his myopic straight man/adopted son, attempt to correct a near-catastrophic time rift Sherman created while trying to impress his girlfriend.
The movie runs 90 minutes and is rated PG and popcorn will be served.
“No Nukes”
A very special photographic display is going to be installed in the library’s Helderberg Room at the end of January, the work of French-American photographer Lionel DeLevingne who has been documenting the anti-nuclear movement since the early 1970s.
This exhibit complements Mr. DeLevingne’s March 19 presentation at the Digital Photo Forum. There he will discuss his work as a photojournalist, specifically as documented in his book To the Village: From Montague to Fukushima. To view an online gallery of photos, please visit http://www.lioneldelevingne.com/galleries/no-nukes/.
The Digital Photo Area photographers gather to discuss work they are doing and to share information about how to improve their work. This is an open forum, with occasional special guest photographers. All are invited to bring their work to share and also their questions. Bring work on memory cards, USB drives, CDs. The group meets the third Thursday of each month, except December and August.
