VOORHEESVILLE — Walter J. Fisher Sr. of Voorheesville, a veteran who loved his grandchildren, died suddenly on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at St. Peter’s Hospital. He was 92.
Mr. Fisher was born in Dormansville on March 7, 1930. He served in the United States Army 2nd Armored Division, known as Hell on Wheels, from 1948 to 1949 and then transferred to the Army reserves from 1949 to 1953.

He worked at Albany Castings in Voorheesville, the Cider Mill, and Local 12 Ironworkers.

“Walt was a lifetime member of the Voorheesville Rod and Gun Club and proud member of the Voorheesville Fire Department for 65 years,” his family wrote in a tribute. “He enjoyed gardening, watching NASCAR and the New York Yankees, hunting, playing his lottery numbers, and loved his grandchildren.”

He is survived by his devoted loving wife, Virginia “Ginny” Fischer, and by his children, Bonnie (Lynn) Wacksman of Guilderland, Walter Fisher Jr. (Lou DeMaria) of Prescott, Arizona, Jeff (Candy) Fisher of Delanson, and Jennifer Fisher of Voorheesville.

He is also survived by his grandchildren: Steve (Kathy) Wacksman of Guilderland, Mike Wacksman of Cobleskill, Christina (Stuart) Menzies of Esperance, Katrina Fisher of Knox, Ashley (Justin) Morehouse of Owego, Tiffany (Jared) Wengenack of Schoharie, Jessica (Andrew) Preisner of Westerlo, and Cody (Emily VanWormer) Fisher of Medusa.

He is survived, too, by 17 great grandchildren: Zachary, Connor, and Madison Wacksman; Victoria and Stuart Menzies; Jayden Fisher; David and James Patnode; Courtney, Colin, and Jason Morehouse; Dean and Roy Wengenack; Liam, Owen, Dillon, and Faith Preisner; and two step-grandchildren, Michaela Burbank and Allison Lefebvre.

His son, Jimmy Fischer, died before him.
