Elizabeth Ann ‘Betty’ Mahoney

ALTAMONT — Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Mahoney, the long-time cook at Altamont Elementary School, died on Monday, June 21, 2021, after a brief illness. She was 88.

She was born in Altamont on May 14, 1933 to the late John and Sadie (née Sidoti) Orsini and graduated from Altamont High School in 1951. After high school, she worked at General Electric in Schenectady where her job was to write to the Navy Department in Washington, D.C. to obtain the next port for a Navy ship that required parts so G.E. could ship those parts.

She left her job at G.E. to marry William “Bill” Mahoney, on May 27, 1956, and start a family. They had one son, John.

In the late 1960s, Mrs. Mahoney was appointed as a special deputy for the Albany County Sheriff’s Department.

Mrs. Mahoney was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and traveled to Legion conferences with her husband. She loved bowling and enjoyed  summer family picnics in Rensselaer.

She is survived by her son, John, and his wife, Wendy (Née Miller), and her granddaughter, Kaitlyn.

Her husband, William “Bill” Mahoney, died before her as did her sister, Mary (John) Boucher, and her granddaughter, Ashley Mahoney.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, June 26, from 10 a.m. to noon at Fredendall Funeral Homeat 199 Main St. in Altamont with a funeral service to follow at noon. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Altamont.
