My library taxes are going to good use!

To the Editor:

I have been taking advantage of the services of the Guilderland Public Library since I moved to Guilderland in 1993.

The staff has always been professional, kind, and helpful and provides great service. I was worried about what would happen to the library during COVID but have been pleasantly surprised at the number of programs being offered and the adjustments the library has made to serve me during this difficult time.

A few weeks ago, I tried to pick up a book I had on hold on a Monday morning and had trouble getting through to a staff member to place the book outside on the table for me. All I could think was — wow, the staff there are really busy and I am happy to know that many people continue to use the library services.

The staff have so much to keep them busy, having to run in and out of the building and then get the book returns from the middle of the parking lot.

The programs they lined up have been wonderful. I feel that my taxes are going to good use!

That is why I was appalled to read the comments made by some board members recently [“Trustees listen to Guilderland library staff concerns and delay public browsing,” The Altamont Enterprise, Dec. 7, 2020].

How could someone suggest that people have not had access to the library or that it’s not serving a purpose? I don’t want the library open right now. The risks are too great for staff and the public.

I hope that the board can evaluate its narrow view of what constitutes library services and continue to employ the staff there who serve us so well.
