Westerlo Library Notes for Thursday, December 3, 2020
Have you entered?
You’ve heard of the Ugly Christmas Sweaters; well we are having an ugly-mask competition! We will have take-and-make kits available just inside the front vestibule on a bookshelf that will include a mask and supplies to get you started. You can add your own creative supplies or even sew an “ugly” face mask.
Kits will be available starting Nov. 27, while supplies last, and either a photo of your mask can be sent to or, better yet, we would love to display your never-worn decorated mask in our front window by Dec. 7.
Categories for the contest are Elementary Age, Middle and High School Age, and Adult. A committee of face-mask connoisseurs will judge the best — ahem, “ugliest.” The “ugliest” masks will be announced Dec. 10. We can’t wait to see all of the creative and festive “ugly” masks and hope they bring some holiday cheer to you and your family!
Third Thursday
Book Club
The December book selection is “Where’d You Go, Bernadette: A Novel” by Maria Semple. We have several copies available at the library for you to borrow. We will meet in a GoToMeeting on Dec. 17 to share thoughts about the book, and look ahead to discuss book club selections for 2021.
Spice
Take-and-Makes
December’s spice is Cinnamon. This kit includes recipes, information on the health benefits and history of cinnamon, and some of the spices to make the recipes.
For everyone who loves to try new recipes, this is the take and make for you. There is also a GoToMeeting set up for talking about what recipes you tried and to chat about food in general. Information about the meeting is included in the kit.
STEAM kits
We are getting creative with art this month with our STEAM [science, technology, engineering, art, and math] Take-and-Make Kits. Stop by the library each week to pick up new kits in the front vestibule on the bookshelf just before you come into the main library or you can email and request to have it put out on the porch for a pick up. youth@westerlolibrary.org.
Technology Wednesdays
Do you have a new smartphone or tablet, but don’t know how to download digital materials? Call 518-797-3415 at the library or make an appointment to see Amy on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for free personalized, one-on-one instruction.
Homework help
We have special hours that you can bring your own laptops into the library to print out assignments, ask us for extra help, or get help with school/homework: Mondays from 2 to 3 p.m., and Thursdays and Fridays from 6 to 7 p.m.
Of course, you are always welcome to come in and ask for help with your school or homework. Don’t forget! Our Wi-Fi is available for free 24/7 in our parking lot.
GoToMeeting
Help Video
Until we can have in-person programs, we will be offering virtual programs. These programs are shared through GoTo Meetings.
We have a video on our website, www.westerlolibrary.org, to help explain the basics of how to use GoToMeeting. Most of the time all you need to do is click on the links that are given on your computer, tablet, or smartphone or call into the meeting. You will need to get the GoToMeeting app.
If, after watching the video, you have any questions, please call the library at 518-797-3415 during our regular hours and one of our staff will be happy to help you.
