Driver of pickup with Trump flag confronted BLM supporters, police say
BETHLEHEM — An Altamont man was charged on Thursday with reckless driving, a misdemeanor, after, police say, he confronted Black Lives Matter supporters in Delmar.
On Election Day, Nov. 3, at about 5 p.m., Robert C. Sweet, 53, “verbally confronted several Black Lives Matter supporters,” according to a release from the Bethlehem Police Department.
The department describes events unfolding this way, based on a video obtained from a witness: A white male in a Dodge pickup truck, with American flags and a Trump flag attached to the bed of the pickup, stopped in the intersection of Delaware and Elsmere avenues, and verbally confronted the BLM supporters. The driver then realized police had been contacted and left the scene “in a reckless manner almost striking another vehicle.”
Sweet had driven away by the time police arrived but was later identified and charged. He could not be reached for comment.
He was released with a return date in Bethlehem Town Court for Nov. 24.
