Enterprise hitting on all cylinders

To the Editor:

If The Altamont Enterprise were a car with a V4 engine, the Oct. 22 issue would have been hitting on all cylinders.

1. Warners Lake name change. They say that posts with cats or pandas are the most popular content on the Internet. But these posts pale next to beautiful photos of autumn landscapes with water in them. Noah Zweifel’s photo of Warners Lake was appealing and I liked his story with the mix of local history and the explanation of how places get named. The article also led to me reminiscing about many pleasant hours spent fishing on the lake and conversing with the late Willard Osterhout.

2. Old Men of the Mountain. John R. Williams’s comments about how he and his fellow Old Men of the Mountain gave advice on the Yankees in the American League play-off was one of the wittiest and most insightful pieces of sports writing that I have read in awhile. Thank you, Mr. Williams.

3. Crossgates lawsuits. Sean Mulkerrin continues to do a great job in digging into all the minutiae of commercial litigation, leases, and the state of American retail. He seems to be following the advice in Robert Caro’s latest book, “Working,” about how investigative reporters must “turn every page.”

4. A picture is worth a thousand words. Thank you for routinely including a map of large-scale development proposals with your articles. It is hard to look at a vacant piece of land and to envision how it would change.
