Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, October 7, 2020

As part of its phased reopening, Guilderland Public Library’s Normanskill Room is open for public browsing as of Oct. 7: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.; and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For shifts longer than four hours, the room will be closed temporarily halfway through for cleaning and restocking. No appointment is necessary.
Welcome back! We are excited to commence patron browsing in our Normanskill Room, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 7. No appointment is needed.
Hours of operation, with a half-hour closure halfway through to clean and restock, are: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. We’re also open Saturdays for four hours, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for your convenience.
Guidelines:
— Use hand sanitizer upon entering;
— Masks required for patrongs age 2 and older;
— Maintain social distance of 6-plus feet;
— Five people at a time in the room;
— Fifteen-minute browsing sessions;
— Restrooms are not available, due to construction;
— Self-service only;
— Check out all items before leaving;
— Room is monitored by video; and
— Returns go to the shed with the green canopy.

Building project
In addition to partially reopening to the public, Wednesday, Oct. 15 is our target date to begin construction. Multiple preparations are underway for this project, which is anticipated to last until next fall. More return hours
Our return sheds in the main parking lot have been moved to accommodate construction crew equipment. Return hours are now: Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Look for the green canopy. All materials are quarantined 96 hours, then sanitized prior to reshelving.
Albany Guardian Society
We’re partnering with Albany Guardian Society to offer the following virtual programs to patrons. Registration is available on the Events tab of our website. “Navigating the Maze of Senior Services” happens Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 8:30 a.m.
Whether you are a senior, caregiver, or professional working with the elderly, this program will touch on transportation, meals, respite, income-based programs, and other senior service options. Gretchen Moore Simmons, MSW, Assistant Executive Director, LifePath, is the presenter. “A Great Night's Sleep” occurs on Friday, Oct. 23 at 1:30 p.m.

Night Owls Online
On Monday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m., our virtual book club will discuss "The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek" by Kim Michele Richardson, available on Hoopla in eBook and audiobook format. This unique story beautifully illustrates the healing power of the written word, transcending poverty and intolerance throughout Appalachia. Lessons of
Presidential History
History is a great teacher — what can we learn from it, especially this year? On Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m., Dr. Bruce Miroff, UAlbany professor of political science, presents “2020 and the Lessons of Presidential History.”
A compelling examination of past presidential election themes can cast a fresh light on current events and what might unfold in this year's contest. Please register on the Events tab of our website for the virtual link to participate.
Trustees meet
The Guilderland Public Library Board of Trustees will hold a virtual meeting Thursday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. on Facebook. This meeting will be streamed live, then archived on our Facebook page and website. Public commentary may be directed at any time to:
Story times
Our next storytime kits will be ready for curbside pickup Monday, Oct. 19, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., while supplies last. Each thematic kit will contain suggestions for books, rhymes and songs to share together, and one or more fun activities.
