Pedestrian hit as he helps stop larceny suspect fleeing Crossgates

GUILDERLAND — A pedestrian was struck in the Crossgates Mall parking lot on Monday afternoon as a man suspected of larceny was driving away, police say.

“The pedestrian was trying to assist our officers in stopping the vehicle before it sped away,” Guilderland Police Chief Daniel McNally told The Enterprise.

Police are not releasing the pedestrian’s name at this time but will later, said McNally, adding, “I think it’s wonderful he got involved.”

The pedestrian was treated at the scene by Guilderland Emergency Medical Services for non-life-threatening injuries.

Two men —  James M. Carlton, 39, of Hudson Falls, and Lovell T. Roper, 27, of Glens Falls — were chased on foot following a 3:30 p.m. larceny complaint from Bath & Body Works, McNally said.

Carlton fled the scene, striking the pedestrian, and was later located and taken into custody without incident by University at Albany Police on Waverly Place.

Roper was taken into custody near the Homewood Suites hotel near the mall.

Roper has been charged with petit larceny and resisting arrest. Carlton was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment and third-degree assault.

The investigation is ongoing.
