We have to vote the dead wood out of office

To the Editor:

One of the central tenets of our nation is that those serving in public office are meant to serve their constituents, not simply for one’s own self-preservation. A government of the people, by the people, and for the people is supposed to be one actually represented by someone who cares about what those people care about.

When people spend decades in public office, they lose focus on the idea that they serve others, and they start to see their career as their most important concern. In New York’s 20th Congressional District, Paul Tonko has been in public office for over 40 years and his name is synonymous with career politician.

Showing up at a few parades and passing one bill every five years is not adequate representation. Since there are no current term limits on career politicians, we have to vote the dead wood out of office.

Liz Joy is a mother who has raised a family and built a career in the Capital Region. It is long overdue that we are represented by someone who understands our struggles, will actively listen to our concerns, and will work for us in Congress. Liz Joy is that person.
