Jeffrey Berman, distinguished professor of English at the University at Albany, will discuss “Teaching and Writing about Grief” on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. He’ll address the therapeutic value of writing about love and loss, and the important role grief memoirs can play in the healing process

GPL Adventures
Our friends from Mad Science will help kids in grades 3-5 solve a chemical mystery (“che-mystery”) on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 3:30 p.m. We’ll explore the wonders of physical and chemical changes and make our own very own super ball. Please register online, by phone or in person.
“Harriet”
From her escape from slavery through the dangerous missions she led to liberate hundreds of slaves via the Underground Railroad, the story of heroic abolitionist Harriet
Tubman is depicted in the 2019 movie “Harriet”. We’re showing this film, rated PG-13, on our big screen Thursday, Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m. The popcorn is included!

The library will be closed on Monday, Feb. 17 in observance of Presidents’ Day.
Vacation activities
We have several engaging programs planned for school vacation week, and hope you’ll visit often to take advantage of all we have to offer:
— Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 10:30 a.m. - Clifford the Big Red Dog
Clifford returns to GPL to celebrate his birthday with us! Join the party with Barbara Lukas from WMHT as we watch a DVD, share fun crafts and get our photos taken with Clifford. This is a family / all ages event.;
— Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. Parent & T(w)een Night.
Students in grades 5 to 9 and their parent/guardian are invited for a fun night out together for our new monthly Parent & T(w)een Night. We’ll enjoy dessert and create a fused glass suncatcher project, led by the Studio for Art and Craft. Please register online, by phone or in person;
— Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. Building Challenges.
Students in grades 2 to 5: try creating bold configurations with our open building challenges, working solo or together. We’ll provide LEGOS, keva planks, marble runs, and more! Stop by any time during this drop-in program;
— Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 6:30 p.m. “The Secret Life of Pets 2”.
Come enjoy a family film on our big screen, popcorn included! In “The Secret Life of Pets 2” (rated PG), Max and his pet friends explore the idyllic farm they now call home while the owner is absent. What unsupervised trouble will they get into?;
— Thursday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. “Miracle”.
We’re commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid with the 2004 movie “Miracle”, rated PG. Based on one of the greatest moments in sports history, this movie recreates the epic David vs. Goliath Cold War hockey battle that played out with an improbable and stunning result;

Tweens and teens are invited to turn old magazines into original art. We’ll savor a relaxing, creative afternoon, sipping cocoa and creating unique collages. Please register online, by phone or in person;
— Friday, Feb. 21 @ 2:00 p.m. – Meet Your Local K-9
Ever wonder what a police dog does? Come find out as Guilderland Police Officer Don Jones and his canine partner, Zeus, visit GPL! Learn how police dogs are chosen and trained, and watch Zeus in action! This is a family / all ages event;
— Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. “Grandpa Cacao” with Elizabeth Zunon.
Elizabeth Zunon reads her author-illustrated picture book, “Grandpa Cacao: a Tale of Chocolate, from Farm to Family”, for grades Kindergarten through 5. A cocoa and chocolate show-and-tell will follow, and kids can decorate their own chocolate bar wrapper. Candy Kraft Candies is kindly donating chocolates. Please register each child for this program; and
— Take a Break Teen Reader Boxes
Personalized “Take a Break Teen Reader Boxes” for February break are available for grades 8 to 12. Participants will receive a specially-selected library book to check out and an advanced reader paperback book to keep - plus some fun surprises!
Boater Safety Course
This two-day course on Tues. Feb. 18 and Thursday, Feb. 20, 6 to 10 p.m., is led by state-certified safe-boating instructors from Watercraft Network. Participants must attend both days. The state’s Parks and Recreation fee is $10 for a completed certification.
