ALTAMONT — Nancy J. Lown, known as “Nan,” died on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019, at home surrounded by her loving family; her caregivers; and her dogs, Bear and Lady. She was 87.

She was born in Albany, the daughter of the late William H. McCann and Mary E. McCann. Her loving husband of 63 years, Victor, died in June 2018.

“Nan was a fun-loving, caring, warm, and witty lady who loved camping and fishing with her husband and family as well as shopping wherever she could; whether it be at a mall or garage sale, she enjoyed it tremendously,” her family wrote in a tribute. “Some of her family referred to her at times as the ‘QVC Queen’ and said that Home Depot was her grown-up ‘toy store.’

“Nan was also a lover of sweets; her grandchildren would tell stories of how she thought dessert should come before the meal to make it better. Nan was also an avid gardener and a lover of all animals, big and small, especially her dogs.

“Nan grew up in the Albany area and attended Catholic schools; after school, she met and married the love of her life, Victor. They lived in Boston and Newfoundland where Victor was stationed in the Navy.

“After their first son was born, they moved back to the States and continued growing their family in the Schenectady area until moving to Altamont where they lived out the rest of their lives.

“Nan retired from the Guilderland Central School District and went to work for her son Tim’s business, Capitaland Material Handling, where she worked until her final retirement somewhere around 2009.”

Nancy J. Lown is survived by her sister, Dora D’Amato, and her husband, Leonard; by her children, Michael Lown, Timothy Lown and his wife, Pamela, Nancy Herrmann and her husband, Richard, and Linda Lown; by her grandchildren, Christopher, Jessica, Joshua, Brittany, Austin, Connor, and Brent; and by her great-grandsons, Forrest and Chad.

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Her parents, William H. McCann and Mary E. McCann, died before her, as did her husband, Victor Lown, her sister Mary Bosworth, and her brother James McCann.

“The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude and appreciation to extended family and friends, especially her caregivers, Jane, Colleen, Christina, Kim, Marcella, Helen, and Judi, whom they referred to as her girls; they provided the best loving care anyone could ever imagine for their Dear Nan,” the family wrote. “The family would also like to thank the team at Community Hospice for their tender care. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Nan and Vic’s calling hours at New Comer on New Karner Road Colonie on Sunday Oct. 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A celebration of life will follow at 1 p.m. Internment will be private at the convenience of the family.
