To the Editor:

This past Sunday, Aug. 10, my daughter and I had the pleasure of going to the book-signing for Images of America Altamont by Keith C. Lee. Met a lot of old friends and also some nice visits.

Yesterday, I sat and read this great book cover to cover. Born in Albany, my mother and father moved to Altamont when I was 10 months old. Dad was a D & H railroad man and the passenger locals was a good way for him to get to his work at the D & H Plaza office.

In this book were mentioned many people that, as a young boy, I remembered well — Plank & Righter, Bert Rector, Ward Ackerman, Fred Dorsett, Harry Fredendall, Les Crounse, and many more.

What a wonderful book.

When Keith Lee signed my book, which I purchased for my oldest, daughter Carol Guilz, I told him that I was a little disappointed that more auto racing at our fairgrounds half-mile speedway was not mentioned. Keith made me feel a lot better when he said another book is in the works and a lot more about the fair will be covered.

And, of course, I hope it will be a good share concerning all the great drivers and races we were able to witness.

Yes, I am a fan of auto racing and, at 88 years of age, still following it. When I was 4 years old, Dad took me to the fairgrounds to watch a race.

Billy Winn won that day; I’ll never forget it. That got me started. My parents in later years boarded drivers, among them the great Tommy Hinershitz.

My, what memories this book by Mr. Lee brought back. Read it!
