Guilderland Library Notes for Thursday, March 14, 2019

The Southern Adirondack Beekeepers’ Association will give a free introductory class on beekeeping on Saturday, March 23, at 2 p.m. at the Guilderland Public Library.

In this information and reality-TV age, when it’s becoming increasingly more challenging to separate fact from fiction, your library stands ready to help you seek objectivity. As concern regarding climate change steadily grows and the clock ticks, we’ll take stock of the latest stats and strategies for tackling this issue.

Join us Saturday, March 16, at 2 p.m. as Bill Saxonis from the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy presents the evidence and current status regarding climate initiatives. Mr. Saxonis is a recognized expert on the topic, with a career spanning four decades leading energy policy for New York State.

Check our website, www.guildlerlandlibrary.org, for additional climate-related programs coming up soon.

Disney Movies & Trivia

The next installment of our Disney movie series happens Sunday, March 17 at 2 p.m. as we screen “Mulan.” This retelling of an old Chinese folktale involves a teenage girl who disguises herself and secretly takes her father’s place in the army. Aided by Mushu the dragon, Mulan becomes one of China's greatest heroines in the process.

This movie series culminates with Disney Trivia Family Night, Friday, April 26 at 6 p.m., when teams of up to five people (with at least one person age 16+) will compete for top honors.  Disney costumes encouraged! Please register for Trivia Night online, by phone or in person.

Music and the Mind

Playing music, more than almost any other activity, strengthens and preserves brain function in profound ways. Moreover, continuing music education helps keep your brain young! Find out more Wednesday, March 20  at 7 p.m. as University at Albany neuroscientist, Dr. Ewan McNay, discusses the far-reaching benefits playing music has on brain health.

Civics 101

Speaking of trivia, how knowledgeable are you about the USA?  Could you pass the civics test given to become a U.S. citizen?

Come to a fun-filled trivia night Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m. and find out! This program is designed for teens and adults; please pre-register.

Moms, Babies & Cake

If you have a baby from newborn to 12 months old, we have a special time carved out for you on Friday, March 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Join us to chat, relax, and compare notes with other parents. Dads are encouraged to attend as well.

This brief respite is intended to foster connections and mutual support. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed or just need a cup of coffee and some adult conversation, please join us!

Bring along your favorite cake to share. Older siblings are welcome too — we’ll have fun resources available for them. Please register in advance.

Snowy Owl and more

On Friday, March 22 at 2 p.m., families are invited to view a snowy owl and other rescued birds of prey up close and learn more about them. Joyce Perry, of Whispering Willow Wildcare, will inform us about these majestic birds.  Please register online, by phone or in person.
