On Saturday, March 2, at 2 p.m., Monica Gray explains researching within the New York State Archives located in Albany. Attendees will discover how to tap into this rich but sometimes daunting resource.

Additionally, professional genealogist and Guilderland resident Lisa Dougherty provides free family history consultations on a drop-in basis the second Wednesday of each month. The next session is slated for Wednesday, March 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. Lisa will work with you to help uncover your roots, using various resources, including several databases we have onsite.  

Tai Chi and QiGong

Our popular Tai Chi and Qi Gong classes continue on select Thursday mornings at 11:00 a.m. through the end of May.  The next class is slated for today, Feb. 28, give it a try! This gentle exercise helps strengthen and relax muscles and joints, while bolstering balance.

Our instructor, Rich Goodhart, is a certified Tai Chi/QiGong instructor, and has taught at both the Omega Institute and the Kripalu Center in Lenox, Mass.  Please pre-register by phone, online or in person, and wear comfortable clothing.

Oscar and Disney movies

Movies look and sound exceptionally good here in our Helderberg Room, and the price is right to boot.  “A Star is Born,” our final Oscar-nominated February film, will be screened Thursday, Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m.

“The Little Mermaid”, the next Sunday afternoon Disney film, is scheduled for March 3 at 2 p.m., leading up to Disney Trivia Night Friday, April 26. Try to guess the possible trivia questions as you watch the movie!       

Food, for better or worse

“The Serious Side of Food:  A Readings and Discussion Program” is a six-part series that goes beyond eating for sustenance and enjoyment to explore some of the underlying issues that lie on our plates. Steve Barnes, senior writer and arts editor at the Times Union and adjunct professor of journalism at University at Albany, leads the discussions.

Books will be provided; space is limited. This series kicks off Wednesday, March 6 with a quick 1/2-hour session to distribute books and the syllabus. Subsequent meetings are slated for March 20 and 27; April 3, 17, 24; and May 1. Please plan to attend all sessions, and pre-register online, by phone or in person.  

Better Books Sale

Mark your calendar for the second Saturday of each month for our Better Books Sale.  You’ll find bargains galore – books, CDs and DVDs, oh my! The next sale happens March 9, from 10 a.m. to  4 p.m.

Irish music

The next installment of our Sunday Concert Series is Toss the Feathers, an engaging trio performing traditional Irish tunes March 10 at 2 p.m. Their lively music incorporates several instruments, guaranteed to ignite a pre-St. Patrick’s Day celebratory mood.

“3 Little Birds” on hold

Please note that our popular “3 Little Birds: Music and Movement” Friday morning series for youngsters and their families or caregivers is currently on old while Miss Josalyn is on the mend. She misses everyone, and is hoping to return March 22 at 10:30 a.m.  Please see our Facebook page for updates (and like us while you’re there!)

Mother’s Day Marketplace

We’re gearing up for our Mother’s Day Marketplace on Saturday,  May 11,from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Vendors may apply to sell their products and services until Friday, April 26.

Cost per table is $25, and vendors pocket 100 percent of their sales revenue. Optional donations for a mega vendor basket will also be accepted. Please see our Facebook or email Carol Kott for more information:   .

Library of Things

We currently have about 140,000 fiction and non-fiction selections to peruse. But — are you aware that we also have a sizable “Library of Things” to borrow?

Here’s a rundown of the list, which may surprise you:  Gadgets: 3D virtual reality headset; Echo Dot (“Alexa”); GoPro; power bank portable battery; WiFi hotspot.

Cable Alternatives: Apple TV; Chromecast; FireStick; HD TV antenna; Roku streaming stick.

Home and Hobby: Automotive OBD II code reader (check engine light detective); folding tables; cake pans and cookie cutters; Kill A Watt EZ power meter; fishing poles; metal detectors.

Kits: “Birthday in a Backpack” kid party activities; storytime kits; CPR training kits.

Games: a plethora of board and lawn games, from Dungeons and Dragons and Exploding Kittens to Corn Hole and KanJam.
