EAST BERNE — David J. Filkins — whom his family described as “a great man, husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend” — died suddenly at Albany Medical Center on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018.
He was born in Albany and resided in East Berne. He was a Class of 1988 graduate of Berne-Knox-Westerlo.
He owned and operated his own business, East Berne Asphalt, LLC since 1998. He loved hunting, snowmobiling, and spending time with his loving family.
“He will be missed and loved by many family and friends. Forever in our hearts,” his family wrote in a tribute.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Audra McHale, and their adored son, Keenan Patrick Filkins.
He is also survived by his father, Judson D. Filkins; his sister, Monica Filkins Castelli; his nieces, Morgan and Olivia Castelli; his stepsisters, Marcy Ashline and her husband, John, and Stacey Woodworth and her husband, Lance; his nephew, Wesley Grippin; his great aunt, Margaret Filkins; his aunt, Barbara Joslin, and her husband, Robert; his uncles, Richard Storm and his wife, Wendy, Ray Storm and his wife, Karen, Richard Filkins and his wife, Betty, and Ralph Filkins and his wife, Rosemary; his brother, Scott “Chubby” Green; his brother-in-law, Kerin McHale and his wife, Kerri; his sister-in-law, Shannon McHale; and numerous cousins and their families.
His mother, Lee F. (née Storm) Crosier, died before him, as did his mother-in-law, Kathleen M. McHale; his stepfather, George Crosier; his stepmother, Sandy Filkins; and his aunt, Marion Duffy, married to Richard Duffy.
Calling hours were held at Fredendall Funeral Home at 199 Main St. in Altamont on Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in Berne. A celebration of his life will follow at the Maple on the Lake following the interment. All are invited to attend.
Memorial contributions may be made to a fund for his son, Keenan Patrick Filkins, through the State Employees Federal Credit Union’s Altamont branch, 763 Route 146, Altamont, NY 12009.
