Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, August 6, 2014

Renowned folk music performer and family literacy teacher Cathy McGrath will perform a special “Rollicking Teakettle” event just for kids on Friday, Aug. 8, at 2 p.m., at the Guilderland Public Library.

McGrath uses guitar, banjo, limberjacks, flute, and penny whistle in her programs; she takes particular delight in getting kids to play traditional American singing games. You’ll clap, sing, and dance in a celebration of creative movement, self-expression, and friendly cooperation. Come join the fun and celebrate another successful Summer Reading Program. No registration is  required.

“Ten Percent on the Tenth”

Do you remember how delicious that meal tasted when you went to Juicy Burger for the Library Foundation’s “Dining to Donate” event at the end of July?  Whether it was a burger, a salad, or those amazing wraps (and don’t forget the fries!), you really enjoyed it. Well, you can do it again from 5 to 9 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 10, when once again Juicy Burger will donate 10 percent of all sales to “Ten Percent on the Tenth,” that evening to the Guilderland Library Foundation.

What does the Foundation do with the money it raises? It provides for library’s services not funded by your taxpayer dollars. Every time you use the Community Literary Garden – where we just had a jam-packed Family Fun Day – or your child browses in the children’s area, or you attend a Carol J. Hamblin Notable Author Talk, you’re benefitting from the Foundation’s good works.

There are no coupons to bring, no secret passwords to utter, just eat at Juicy Burger between 5 and 9 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 10, and you’ll be a part of this worthwhile campaign.

Travel for Genealogy

Guilderland genealogy enthusiasts will gather at GPL on Thursday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m., to share their experiences of traveling in pursuit of their family histories.

A panel will lead the discussion, and relate how their quests — which included visits to libraries, town halls, cemeteries, and churches — were rounded out by meeting family members.

The evening’s session focuses mainly on travels outside of North America. There will be time for questions and answers, and commentary by participants.

Registration is required; please call 456-2400, ext. 2.

SRC Prize pick-up day

Celebrate the end of another year of successful summer reading. Summer Reading Club participants are invited to GPL’s Helderberg Room on Friday, Aug. 15, to pick up their free books and gift certificates from local businesses.

We hope you enjoyed “Fizz, Boom, Read!” and “Sparked a Reaction!”
