Mary Jane Safford, who recently moved into Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland, sits in front of the Model T that she and her late husband, Morris Safford, once owned. They sold the car years ago to family friend Dan Stewart, who drove it to a recent car collectors’ event at the center, so that Mary Jane Safford could see it again.

Charlie Stewart has a piercing gaze, a deep voice, and an authoritative manner, but speaks quietly. Here, he leans against one of his three Model Ts, a 1925 depot hack, which he explained was often used as a taxi to ferry people to and from train depots. The third seat could easily be lifted out if people had a lot of luggage.

Last winter, Charlie Stewart finished restoring the complete engine on his 1925 Model T depot hack. “That was my winter project,” he says, “to get that in the car and get it running.”
