Dorothy D. Barker

ALTAMONT — Dorothy D. Barker, a strong-willed woman who loved her family, died on Monday, July 14, 2014. She was 98.

Mrs. Barker was born on Nov. 15, 1915, in Amsterdam, to the late Fred and Bessie (née Cline) Dopp.

She lived in Altamont for most of her life, but spent the last eight years at Kingsway Manor, in Schenectady.

She taught first grade in the Guilderland Central School District for many years, and enjoyed teaching, said her great-granddaughter, Jessica Ramsudh.

Mrs. Barker participated in the Altamont Fair every year with her husband, by displaying milk bottles, and was active in the Altamont Reformed Church.

She was an avid reader, loved her flower garden, and enjoyed cross-stitching and knitting.

“She was a very strong woman,” said Ms. Ramsudh. “Nothing ever kept her down.”

Mrs. Barker is survived by her daughter, Barbara A. Bombardier, and six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Warren Barker, died before her, as did her daughter, Ruth Walk.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 18, at Memory’s Garden, 983 Watervliet Shaker Road, Albany, with Pastor Robert Luiden officiating.

Arrangements were made by the Fredendall Funeral Home in Altamont, and online condolences may be made at www.fredendallfuneralhome.com.
