ALTAMONT — Judith A. Newcomb, a mother and grandmother who had worked as a dental assistant, died at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s in Albany on Friday, March 9, 2018. She was 82.

Born on June 14, 1935, in Albany to the late Mildred (née Laraway) and Clarence Barber, she grew up on her family’s dairy farm in Middleburgh.

She began dating Lyle A. Newcomb while attending Cornell University. They were married for over 50 years, their union ending only with his death in 2009.

The Newcombs, who lived in Altamont, enjoyed traveling and other social activities, including skiing and camping, and were long-time congregants of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Altamont.

Mrs. Newcomb was a homemaker and worked for many years as a dental assistant for both Dr. Dan Burns and Dr. Stan Lis in Guilderland. She was a volunteer with Community Caregivers and the Altamont Free Library, as well as a member of Altamont’s Train Station Quilters.

Judith A. Newcomb is survived by her children, Carla S. Stefan and her husband, Douglas, of Voorheesville, Lori J. Walrath and her husband, Stephen, of Altamont, and Lyle “Tom” Newcomb and his wife, Rachelle, of Davis, California; by six grandchildren, Lesley and Robert Stefan, Lydia and James Walrath, and Juliana and Lyla Newcomb; and by her sister-in-law, Fay Haynes of Oneonta.

Her parents and her husband died before her, as did her half-sister, Frances Hubbard.  

Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 16, from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church at 140 Maple Ave. in Altamont, with funeral services to follow at 11 a.m.  A private interment will follow at a later date.
