Stuart M. Dean

ALTAMONT — Stuart M. Dean, a World War II veteran, engineer, and dedicated volunteer fireman, died on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at his home. He was 90.

Born on May 2, 1924, in Landsdale, Pa., he was the son of the late Fay Walter and Hilda Marcy Dean.

He served in the Army Air Force during World War II.

He joined his first fire company at the age of 18. He was a 50-year member of the Guilderland Center Fire Department and served as chief several times.

He married the love of his life, Betsy Bishel, on July 14, 1951; together, they raised five children.

He was a member of the Noah Masonic Lodge and a member of the Masons for 65 years.

He retired in 1988 from state’s Department of Environmental Conservation as a senior hydraulics engineer.

He is survived by his wife, Betsy (née Bishel) Dean; his children, Dorothy Mintline and her husband, Burt, Alice Ruby and her husband, Rich, Mark Dean, Paul Dean, and John Dean; his his brother David Dean and his wife, Brenda; 14 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to calling hours on today, June 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Fredendall Funeral Home at 199 Main Street in Altamont. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 13, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Online condolences may be made at www.fredendallfuneralhome.com.
