To illustrate How a Chick Grows, read by kindergarten teachers Charity Petti and Janine Sargalis, Berne-Knox-Westerlo kindergarten teacher Stefanie Scram pops out of an egg in front of elementary students during the Parents As Reading Partners assembly this month. PARP is meant to foster a love of reading in students and encourage families to join them.

Sharing stories: First-grade teacher Judy Tambasco, holds the microphone for Ruby Terrell, at right, who reads the back of one of her favorite books, Hedgie’s Surprise by Jan Brett. In her hand, a stuffed hedgehog is raised for the assembly of students to see. Emily Sherman, left, holds The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle. Typically funded by the Parent-Teacher Association, PARP was awarded a $2,000 Early Literacy grant from Target last October that will supplement the PTA funds and pay for books, supplies, overhead costs, and a carnival celebration at the end of the year.
