Despite it all, the Conklins were having fun in the snow at the Berne Winter Festival in the town park 24 hours after heavy rounds of snow came down Thursday through Friday. Joshua Conklin throws a football, standing up to his knees in fresh powder. His grandmother, Bonnie Conklin, relaxes, sitting in the snow.

Taking it on, Evan Thomas steps with snowshoes across the thick, fresh layer of snow that covered the Berne park along with the rest of the region as snow fell from Feb. 12 to 14. Children went snowshoeing, sledded down snow banks, created icy forts, and skated in the pavilion of the Berne Town Park Saturday to enjoy the snowy bounty of the season.

Steady circles: Calvin Raymond, 4, skates at an even pace with his mother, Carey Raymond, following behind. The pavilion of the Berne Town Park was turned into an ice rink for a winter festival on Feb. 15. The event was organized by the youth council, of which Raymond is director and her father, Chuck Conklin, is a member.

Grooming the ice, young skaters use snow shovels to scrape away the half-melted pieces of ice and slush from to prepare the rink for another round of skating at the Berne Town Park on Feb. 15. The rising temperatures since the pavilion was first filled caused the rink's surface to become uneven, Chuck Conklin, an organizer for the Berne Winter Festival, said on Saturday.
