WRIGHT — Carl E. Slater, a veteran and a farmer, died of cardiac arrest on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at Ellis Hospital after having pneumonia for a long time. He was 84.

“Mr. Slater was born on Aug. 5, 1929, in the Town of Wright and was a lifelong resident of the area,” his family wrote in a tribute. “He attended Schoharie High School and later was drafted in the United States Army serving in the Signal Corps.”

He married his wife, Catherine Slater, on Dec. 15, 1962.

“Upon his honorable discharge, Carl worked at the former Schenectady Army Depot for 18 years and later operated his dairy farm until selling his cows and retiring in 1996,” his family wrote. “He served on the planning board for the town of Wright for 33 years and was a member of the Old Men of the Mountain.  Carl was an avid Yankees fan and enjoyed all sports and his garden.”

Carl E. Slater is survived by his wife, Catherine E. (née Torok) Slater; his daughter, Denise Fonda and her husband, William, of Berne; his son, Donald Slater Jr. and his wife, Cathy, of Malta; his grandsons, William Fonda and his wife, Susan, of South Weymouth, Mass., and Daniel Fonda of Albany; three granddaughters, Meagan Tumer and her husband, Uzay, of Boston, Mass., and Whitney Slater and Brittany Slater, both of Clifton Park. He is also survived by five step-grandchildren, and a step-great-granddaugther in Springfield, Mass. A great-grandson is expected in March. He is survived, too, by his brother, Floyd Slater, and his wife, Marie, of Schenectady, and several nieces and nephews.

His son, Carl Slater Jr., died before him, in July 2006, as did his brother, Donald Sr., in 1959; his sister, Stella Osterman, in 2004; and his infant sister, Wanda.

A funeral was held on Monday, Dec. 2, at the Langan Funeral Home in Schoharie. Burial will be in the Knox Cemetery.
