To the Editor:

My husband and I were in hysterics as we read Mr. Mike Seinberg’s column “Distracted Driving” in your Sept. 28 issue. As Baby Boomers, we can totally relate to this extremely entertaining article and hope it enjoys a wide readership.

A few months ago, we bought our dream car, an Audi, and today we still cannot take a road trip without dragging out the over-sized manual to find out how to operate the most basic controls such as windshield wipers (which have a rain sensor, by the way) or the high beams or the air-conditioner. The car is loaded with “Intelligent Technology” that includes a Multi-Media Interface and Predictive Efficiency and Traffic Jam Assist.

If that isn’t enough, it also has an energy-saving Start/Stop mode where the engine shuts off automatically when the car is stopped for a brief period, like at a traffic light. It’s too bad we are not intelligent enough to be able to understand how to use all these wonderful features designed to help us mindlessly navigate the highways.

The technology on some of the new upper-end cars is amazing, but also over the top and could easily become a full-time preoccupation. Like many things in life, it is a double-edged sword.

We only hope that, by the time we decide to take the big leap and purchase a new car (most likely another Audi), we will have by then mastered the literally hundreds of “smart” settings designed to give us the gift of effortless driving.
